Sometimes, buying new is not always a better choice.
Today, many new instruments–particularly those found online–are made very poorly, with cheap materials and non-standardized parts. Purchasing a new instrument may seem like a great bargain, but the repairs required just to make it work could be a nightmare!
Reasons to Repair
A musical instrument is an investment. Under proper care and maintenance, a musical instrument can last a long time, either with the same musician or passed on through generations.
Much like other valuable investments, wear-and-tear is unavoidable. But, with proper care, routine inspections, regular maintenance, and repairs as needed, the lifespan of a musical instrument is virtually infinite.
It’s easy for us to think that an item is inherently better simply because it’s brand new. We all love that “new-car” feel. But, much like with cars (and many other major purchases), new does not always mean superior, more durable, higher performance, or in any way “better” than something that is old.
Many new musical instruments on the market today have had corners cut through the manufacturing process, utilizing cheaper materials, less thorough precision work, and ultimately an instrument that is not very high quality.
More often than not, repairing an instrument that has stood the test of time will be more valuable than purchasing a new instrument.
Repair services often come in a wide array of complexity levels–from a “playing condition” (adjust and reseat) to a full mechanical overhaul. Regardless, virtually any instrument, regardless of the age or condition, can be repaired to performance quality, refurbished as if it were brand-new, or restored to its original glory. At Second Wind Music, we are invested in giving a musical instrument its second wind to increase the life, add to the legacy, and spread the joy of music.
Restoring/Refurbishing a Used Instrument
Every instrument has a legacy–a story to tell.
From Grandma’s old clarinet left in the attic for years, to the severely dented cornet purchased on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, every instrument has a unique history. Possibly a beginner horn passed through generations–or a step-up, intermediate, or professional instrument purchased for an aspiring professional musician–the number of rehearsals and performances seen by the instrument could be more than we see in a lifetime.
Second Wind Music is very passionate about maintaining that legacy. Restoring the instrument to its original quality, or refurbishing it to meet modern musical demands–any instrument is certainly worth the investment.
Why Purchase a Used Instrument?
Isn’t a brand new one better?
Simply put; NO, not always.
Manufacturing processes of musical instruments have changed over time. While it is still possible to find excellent quality instruments, it is so important not to discount a vintage musical instrument, no matter the current quality.
Some instrument brands or models have a remarkable reputation for not only quality, but entirely original qualities that are not presently replicated. From Mount Vernon Bach Trumpets, to Mark VI Saxophones, every vintage instrument model has characteristics that are often desired by professionals, students, and hobbyists. In many cases, the material quality, custom manufacturing processes, and technical aspects of these models is unparalleled by modern instrument companies.
When you purchase an instrument from Second Wind Music, this instrument has been repaired or refurbished to working condition. We take pride in our work, and the ability to bring an exhausted instrument back to life.
Regardless of the brand, model number, or reputation of the instrument, you are guaranteed to receive a high-quality product that plays. Anything less than that will not be sold by our company. As an added bonus, though, you will be receiving an instrument with character, and continuing that legacy that a brand new instrument simply does not have.
