Band Instrument Repair FAQ
Welcome to our Band Instrument Repair FAQ! Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just starting out, we understand that keeping your instruments in top condition is essential for optimal performance. Below are some common questions customers often ask about band instrument repair:
We specialize in repairing a wide range of band instruments including brass (trumpets, trombones, etc.), woodwinds (flute, clarinets, saxophones, etc.), and some small percussion repairs.
Signs that your instrument may need repair include difficulty playing, unusual sounds, stuck keys/valves/slides, or any visible damage. Often times, especially with woodwind instruments, there are early signs of having to work just a little harder to get a note to “speak.”
YES. Second Wind Music provides FREE estimates for all repair services. A skilled technician will thoroughly examine your instrument and provide a detailed breakdown of suggested repairs and associated costs. We do not proceed with the work until receiving your approval.
While repair costs can seem overwhelming, it’s best to leave it to a professional. Basic maintenance can be done safely as long as you are comfortable you know how: oiling/greasing parts, light cleaning, etc.
When it comes to a repair that’s compromising the function or structure of your instrument, it’s best to bring it to a professional rather than risk causing more damage.
Repair times can vary depending on the extent of the damage as well as current workload. Some minor repairs may be completed within a few hours or days, while comprehensive repads or overhauls may take over a week. Regardless, an approximate timeline will be provided along with your free estimate, and we will contact you when the instrument is ready for pickup.
Absolutely! Second Wind Music specializes in restoring vintage instruments with attention to original craftsmanship.
In most cases, it is still worth it to repair an older instrument. New instruments (particularly the more affordable models) are built with very cheap materials. Restoring a vintage instrument will often produce a better product than buying a new instrument with almost disposable quality out-of-the-box. If you are ever unsure, just ask!
Routine maintenance and proper care are key to preventing unexpected repairs. This includes regularly cleaning/swabbing your instrument, storing it correctly, and avoiding extreme temperatures and humidity. In addition, it’s best to schedule periodic maintenance inspections with a qualified technician. Woodwind instruments, in particular, should be inspected for adjustments every six months.
At Second Wind Music, we like to provide options for our customers whenever possible. Perhaps all you need is a “quick fix” so the instrument plays for your concert this week (Play Condition). Or maybe you’ve got enough time for a more thorough repair.
Sometimes, an instrument’s current condition would dictate the level of repair needed. Or maybe you’ve inherited a truly beautiful vintage instrument which you’d like to have restored to its original glory (Overhaul).
Whenever possible, Second Wind Music will provide a range of options based on what you need.
At Second Wind Music, all work is guaranteed. Warranty terms may vary based on product purchased or services performed. However, for instrument repair services, your instrument is guaranteed to be in playing condition when it leaves our shop unless otherwise specified.
