Exploring the Vibrant Musical Heritage of Plainfield, Illinois
While Plainfield may seem like a quiet suburb today, its musical past has been vibrant and bold. Dating as far back as 1899, Plainfield’s Opera House Block features a beautiful performance auditorium and clock-tower turret, with architectural nods to Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival styles.
Plainfield’s Electric Park began as an amusement park in the 1910s. The WWAE radio station studio and transmitter was also located in the park, and broadcasted church services, organ music, and dance tunes into the 1920s. By the Prohibition era, Electric Park had become a major live-music venue featuring live organ recitals, jazz bands, and touring acts. In the 1930s, Duke Ellington’s jazz orchestra paid a visit to Plainfield. During the rapidly progressing “Jazz Age,” Plainfield was somewhat of a cultural “hub” for music and dance.
Through the 1940s/1950s, the Plainfield Musical Club hosted concerts, scholarships, and club recitals. The Plainfield Public Library continues to host similar events. Fast-forwarding to the ’60s and ’70s, Plainfield also became a stop on a regional circuit, again featuring popular touring musicians.
Today, Plainfield’s music still thrives with its local school music programs, live performance venues, and local music academies.
